Thanks to grants from the Medica Foundation and from Metropolitan Health Program, our Mental Health Services initiated a program designed to improve participants healthy lifestyle. The grants make it possible to improve the diets through a nutritionist that assists with menu planning and cooking healthy meals. Other resources provided by the grants allow the participants opportunities to “get up off that sofa” and become more active.
At the halfway point, the program has seen almost 50 individuals take advantage of the program. Marsha Claiborne said she is hoping that the outcomes include decreasing the complications of diabetes, encourage weight loss and increase physical activities – “More people with a serious mental illness die from complications from diabetes than from suicide” – according to Marsha Claiborne, Director of Mental Health.
